TPLO Surgery
TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) is a surgical procedure commonly performed on dogs to address a torn cranial cruciate ligament (CCL), similar to the ACL in humans. This ligament stabilizes the knee joint, and injury to it can cause pain, lameness, and joint instability in dogs.
How Does the Surgery Go?
1. Preparation
Your veterinarian will conduct a thorough examination and X-rays or other diagnostic tests to confirm the CCL tear.
2. Surgical Procedure
- Anesthesia: The dog is placed under general anesthesia to ensure they are comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.
- Incision: A small incision is made on the side of the knee to access the joint.
- Bone Cut (Osteotomy): The top portion of the tibia bone is cut and repositioned to change the angle of the joint, stabilizing it without relying on the torn ligament.
- Plate and Screws: A metal plate and screws are used to secure the repositioned bone in place.
3. Closure
The incision is then closed with stitches or staples.
Recovery Time
Once discharged, your dog will need restricted activity to allow the bone to heal properly. This includes:
Regular check-ups with our veterinarian will be necessary to monitor healing progress and ensure there are no complications. After 8 weeks we will recommend your pet to come back and repeat radiographs to ensure proper healing.
Benefits of TPLO
- Improved Joint Stability: Reduces the risk of arthritis and other joint issues in the long term.
- Faster Recovery: Compared to some other surgical options, TPLO often allows for quicker recovery and return to normal activities.
Other Considerations
TPLO surgery can be expensive due to the specialized equipment and expertise required. Our recommendation is to have radiographs completed for our doctor to accurately be able to quote you. Your veterinarian will discuss whether TPLO is the best option for your dog based on their age, size, and overall health.
TPLO surgery is a significant but effective treatment for CCL tears in dogs, offering a chance for improved mobility and quality of life.
Understanding the procedure and following post-operative care instructions diligently are crucial for a successful outcome.
